In 1840 John Hughes, the first Welshman to settle in the area, explored a wide swath of the then virgin territory before purchasing 240 acres in northern Genesee Township. He chose one of the hilliest areas, with elevations ranging from 850 to 1,050 feet, but he also chose well. The land included oak openings and prairie, and by 1850 the farm was productive and prosperous. John Hughes named his farm “Nant-Y-Calch,” Welsh for Lime Brook, the name given by government surveyors to a small stream which ran through the land.
